yay! After about 21 hours I'm safely back. It's strange to be back after 4 months - let me tell you. I'm trying to stay up so I could go to sleep at a sane hour and switch to the US time.
One side effect from being away for so long - I've just been trying to explain something to [livejournal.com profile] avacon in Russian and didn't realize that until he asked me to "say it in English, please" (he even managed to say it in Russian :))) )
Looking forward to seeing those of you who are here soon.

welcome back!

When do you think you'll be starting work?

From: [identity profile] ksushis.livejournal.com
i'm starting on the 24th. Actually, I've been meaning to ask you a couple of things - first of all, do you know what's the dress code?:) second, do you know anything about a shuttle to/from the commuter rail? at least for the next few months I'll be getting there by public transportation... thanks!!

Date: 2008-11-19 03:09 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] angerona.livejournal.com
Yeah, the dress code is: wear regular clothes :). Engineers certainly wear jeans and t-shirts, maybe slightly nicer things the first couple of days, but not afterwards :).

I don't know anything about the shuttle, unfortunately. Do you need to find out its schedule?

I know where it stops -- right at the back door of Apple hill 3.

From: [identity profile] ksushis.livejournal.com
yeah, I suspected that they don't wear suits - in fact at the interview we were told that "you're wearing suits here the first and last time" :). I do have a silly thought though to wear something nicer than jeans to work - I'm so tired of wearing them to grad school...
yes, I'd love to know the schedule. Who should I contact about it, do you think? My manager doesn't know about the schedule. He just knows the shuttle exists.

Shuttle buses meet the trains that arrive in Natick from Boston at

* 7:34 AM
* 8:05 AM
* 9:25 AM (starting 3/31/08)

(Be sure to get on the bus going to Apple Hill because another bus goes to other companies.)

A shuttle bus accepts passengers at Apple Hill and travels directly to the Natick train station. The pickup spot is on the north side of AH3 (towards Rt. 9). The shuttle picks up at the following times:

* 3:50pm: 4:03pm inbound train (Ends 10/24/08)
* 5:00pm: 5:21pm inbound train or the 5:13pm outbound train (Starts 10/27/08)
* 5:38pm: 5:50pm inbound train or the 6:01pm outbound train
* 6:13pm: 6:26pm inbound train or the 6:21pm outbound train

* Between the hours of 4:30pm and 7:30pm, the INBOUND trains began operating on the OUTBOUND track, and vice versa. This is set to continue for the foreseeable future.

Natick residents are $1 per ride, 40 ride passes are $25. Non-Natick residents are $1.50 per ride or get a 10 ride pass for $11.
Other Facts

* Dispatcher number is 508-647-6446 between 7 AM and 11 AM
* Bus does not operate on weekends, major holidays, or days when Natick public schools are closed for inclement weather.
* The majordomo mailing list for MathWorkers who use the commuter rail is commuterrail@mathworks.com

Thanks! I wonder if I should just email the list...

Sure :). If you have any questions left. As soon as you come in on Monday, you can sign up for the list.

There's also a wiki page where I copied all this from.

can I access the wiki page?

not until you get there on Monday :).

I think I copied all the relevant information, except for the company's commuter reimbursement info.

right outside the back door of apple hill 3 (the main building. The back door is the one opposite to the main entrance).

Directions for Walking from the Natick Train Station

These directions describe how to get to The MathWorks by taking the commuter rail and walking. The walk from the commuter rail station to Apple Hill is about 1.4 miles. You can also call Natick Cab at (508) 653-2300.

1. Take the MBTA Framingham/Worcester line to the Natick station (not West Natick)
2. Go up the stairs. If necessary, cross the bridge over the tracks so you are on the side of the tracks furthest from downtown Natick.
3. Find Walnut Street, which is directly across the street from the foot bridge over the tracks. At the end of the street, the Natick Outdoor & Sports Store will be on your right and a parking lot on your left.
4. Walk north on Walnut Street. You will pass "Walnut Hill" on your right, a relatively large intersection with Bacon Street, and a sharp right/left S-curve on your way to Route 9, which you will reach in about 1.25 miles.
5. Turn left and walk on the grass along Route 9. The first office park you reach is the Apple Hill complex. The MathWorks building (3 Apple Hill Drive) is the second building ahead and has the company name displayed at the top left of the building. The main entrance to the building is on the side opposite from Route 9, near the parking garage.

Note for the way home:

MBTA sometimes runs inbound trains on the track marked "Outbound," and vice-versa. While waiting for your train, watch for it and be prepared to cross the tracks if necessary. If you stand on the foot bridge over the tracks, then you'll have time to reach the train below on either side.

Hmmm... That sounds about the distance from my old house to MIT (took me about 30 mins), although walking on the grass along a highway is not the most exciting thing to do... I took the cab last time I was at the MathWorks - works for the emergencies, but not everyday - too expensive.
Thanks a lot for the info!

Welcome back! I am glad you finally made it :-)
And best luck in your new MathWorks job -- glad they could handle the change in schedule (not that they had much choice really)
